Desk cable management boxes

Hiding a power strip is only part of cable organization. The useful question is whether you can still reach the connections you use, route the cables and follow the equipment's instructions.

Measure with the plugs connected

An empty power strip is not the whole setup. Account for the height and width of the adapters you actually use, plus space for cables to leave the box without being pinched by the lid. Check internal dimensions rather than relying on exterior measurements. Sketch where each lead needs to go: the wall socket, the monitor and a phone on the desktop may all be in different directions.

Choose for how often you unplug

A setup that stays connected has different access needs from a shared desk where devices come and go. Consider how the lid opens, whether you can reach the power-strip switch and how much clearance the box needs in its intended position. Our existing cable-box recap describes the inconvenience of opening a lid for each plug change. That is a useful question to ask before buying, not a verdict on every box.

Decide what actually needs a box

If your main frustration is a phone cable falling behind the desk, consider a cable clip or reusable tie before buying a large enclosure. If several adapters and a power strip are the problem, compare a box with an accessible cable tray. Start with the connections you need to reach, rather than assuming that hiding everything will make the desk easier to use.

Keep the equipment instructions in view

A tidy appearance is not evidence of electrical safety. Check both the enclosure and power-strip instructions before placing powered equipment inside. If permitted use or ventilation requirements are unclear, ask the manufacturer instead of assuming compatibility. The U.S. Fire Administration advises against overloading power strips.

Before you order

  • Compare usable internal dimensions with the connected strip and adapters.
  • Check the lid opening, switch access and direction of cable exits.
  • Confirm the intended setup is permitted by the equipment manufacturers.
  • Check return terms if the listing leaves dimensions or access unclear.
